SAMUEL E. BARTMESS AND FAMILY 1890
Samuel B. Bartmess, son of Oliver Cromwell and Sarah
Clark Bartmess, was born at Dayton, Indiana, on September 15, 1853. He received
a public school education at Dayton, Indiana, and then completed a course
at Otterbein University at Westerville, Ohio, in 1879.
In 1880 he married Miss Elda H. Crouse and for ten years
followed the occupation of farmer on his own land.
In 1890, with wife and three children, he moved to Hood
River, Oregon, where he bought the furniture business of Hanna and Zeigler,
adding to it the under-taking business. In 1916 he closed out the furniture
business, and devoted his tine and energies entirely to undertaking.
At this date (1927) he is the pioneer business man of
Hood River, having been continuous in his line of work since 1890.
He was one of the organizers of the United Brethren Church
in the town of Hood River and has always taken an active part in the civic
interests of the town.
Kind hearted and generous, he never turned a deaf ear
to suffering.
During the life of the Prohibition party he lined up
with them, but before and after, has always been, and is, a
Republican.
Elda Crouse Bartmess, his wife, was born at Germantown,
Pennsylvania, was of German descent. Her father, Dr. David Grouse, was a
pioneer physician, about the first in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where he
practiced for forty years. For two years he represented his county in the
state legislature, his name appearing on the Republican ticket. Her mother,
Rachel Baker Crouse, was a native of Indiana and of English parents. Both
are now deceased.
Elda Crouse finished her education at Logansport Female
College. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bartmess are Earl K. Bartmess
of Portland, Oregon, Meigs W. Bartmess, of Springfield, Massachusetts, Clair
Leaming Bartmess, who died in 1894, (Aldine) Mrs. W.B. Small, of Multnomah,
Oregon and (Marie) Mrs. W.L. Marshall, of Hood River, Oregon.
