SIXTY-FIVE ACRES ON SPRING CREEK NEAR HUSUM PURCHASED THIS WEEK FOR CAMP
COLUMBIA
Work To Start Right Away On Remodeling On Property
Camp Columbia became a reality this week when the board of trustees of the
Columbia Boys Association Inc. purchased the five acre farm at Spring Creek
Husum for the housing of the project.
The purpose of the association is to provide a State
approved home for boys placed in the custody of the welfare department. Boys so
placed will be given a home environment, they will attend the local schools and
as the project goes forward facilities for spare time vocational training will
be added so that when the time arrives for them to leave they will be equipped
to enter the industrial field able to earn their living as skilled workers.
Although the State provides a certain amount for their
maintenance is not adequate for the sustaining of the wide program that an
association such as Camp Columbia will offer for the boys in their charge. With
this in mind the State Charter issued to the trustees will permit the acceptance
of donations and the right to solicit funds to further the accommodations as the
number of boys increases.
Work will start right away on the building already on
the property to make ready for the accommodation of the first twelve boys.
Offers of help are coming in from all quarters and
according to Major F. H. Blake, who is to have charge of the camp, no author is
being turned down.
“What can I do to help is the most frequently asked
question” and the reply is: Steel army cots and pads, Army and Navy blankets,
sheets and pillow cases and pillows, odd chairs and tables, cutlery, china,
cooking utensils, and plumbing supplies.
Neighboring farmers have already offered the use of
tractors together with their services to clear the property, improve the
entrance roads and plow and plant the garden plots. The soil conservation
department has placed the camp on its regular program and will render advice and
services where necessary.
The board of trustees up to date are: Wallace
Stevenson, Forest Wallace, C.A. Finch, Dr. Wayne M. Hinkle, Franck Daubenspeck,
Joe Crowe and Al Lermo.
The camp will swing into operation within the next two
or three weeks and any interested member of the community who would like to take
part in the building of this worthwhile project can get information by phoning
Major F. H. Blake 2566. Any one wishing to make donations should do so by check
made out to the Columbia Boys Association, Inc., Box 402, White Salmon.
