SEES NORTH DALLES INDUSTRIAL CITY
L.A. Duncan Holds High Hopes for The Dalles Suburb When Bonneville Dam Is Built
“What do you predict will be the effect of the Bonneville dam development of the
North Dalles? L.A. Duncan, owner of the irrigated tracks across the river, was
asked during the week.
His reply: “Provided the dam is built with locks large
enough to pass ocean-going vessels to The Dalles -- and I cannot but believe
that it will be done, if we make a strong enough fight -- then I expect to see
the acreage across the river utilized as sites for many industrial plants,
particularly those which will require a considerable tract of land.
“When the industrial development which is bound to
follow cheap power and tidewater navigation arrives, the bridge across the
Columbia is bound to follow and The Dalles will then find that the industrial
section on the north bank will be, in effect, a part of the city.”
Cheap power will also make irrigation possible for the
entire flat, Mr. Duncan believes, and will result in extensive farming of small
tracts not required for manufacturing sites.
