THIS IS HOW A STORY CAN SPREAD
Many stories have been told concerning the Underwood fire this week but the
following one from the Spokesman Review is the prize-winner for exaggerating the
truth. The story was as follows:
FLAMES ROARING INTO UNDERWOOD
By Associated Press
UNDERWOOD, Wash., May 4. – This mid-Columbia river community of 400 was
virtually wiped off the map by fire this afternoon when flames from a near-by
forest fires spread into the town.
Fanned by a brisk wind, the flames swept through a dance
hall, restaurant, and some 12 to 14 homes and several small business buildings
as townsmen carried their household belongings into the streets and nearby open
fields.
Forest fire fighters from across the river in Hood
River, Ore., joined the Washington State fire squads and the townspeople as they
battled the flames that entered the town about 12:15 p.m. Two hours later the
whole town appeared to be blazing.
There were no reports of injured, about Washington
state police have called in ambulance and other emergency equipment to be
prepared.
The flames had spread from a forest blaze in Skamania
county where winds have whipped flames on cut-over forest land for several
days. The fire began menacing Underwood early this morning.
