TIMBLIN MEMORIAL

The association has recently sent out notices to the student body of the old Klickitat Academy, inviting their membership to the association and up to the present time, many of those located in and around Goldendale have undoubtedly neglected to call on the secretary, M.W. Chapman, and pay the membership fee.
We urgently request those who have not already joined the association to do so at once, so that the cost of securing funds will be at the minimum, and that we might be able to go ahead with the plans of ordering the memorial plate and arrange for its installation.
Please do not overlook this matter.

COMMITTEE.

MANY ATTEND TIMBLIN DEDICATION

Firmly embedded in a ponderous boulder of native granite, which rests upon the campus of the Goldendale high school, to the front of the building, is a bronze memorial plate on which is inscribed in Living letter's the following words:

KLICKITAT ACADEMY
1896-1906
IN MEMORY OF

Charles Timblin and Lucille Timblin, pioneers of higher education in Klickitat County,
whose work is a lasting influence for good in this community.

Erected by their students, June 15th, 1922.

The memorial was dedicated last Thursday evening by the student body of old Klickitat Academy, whose existence, but not its memories, ceased when the academy was merged into the Goldendale high school.
'Tis seldom a memorial is erected to the memory of departed ones who trod the ordinary walks of life. "Tis more seldom a student body or other association will perpetuate the memory of a former teacher by the placing of a bronze tablet or other memorial in commemoration of his memory, or give the slightest thought towards such an accomplishment.
The reason is doubly manifest to those of the old students, and those who did not belong to the body, but were acquainted with these teachers, and enjoyed the activities of the school.
The ceremonies last Thursday evening was the result of strong associations and lasting memories that were formed during the days of the academy, which was presided over by a man - a teacher who possessed the gift, the personality, the ambition and the desire to attain a high position, and who chose the ordinary path to travel, but the time being, in order to render service were service was needed; to teach, educate and help those who desired a higher education than was then possible in the smaller committees.
The dedication of the bronze plate was an expression of appreciation for such services rendered the old students by the Professor, ably assisted by his wife, who knew self-denial, incessant labors, and the doors of whose home was always open to welcome those who needed instruction or advice outside of school hours.
The ceremonies were attended by a large number of the old student body and numerous citizens of the town and vicinity. The program, extraordinarily suitable for the occasion, consisted of address made by Judge Brooks and E.C. Ward, and a reading by Mrs. Nelia Binford, a paper on, "Professor, as I Knew Him," by Gertrude Horn Duncan, with vocal and instrumental music.
The meeting was presided over by C.E. Crooks, one of the former students, and president of the Memorial Association and to whom most of the credit should be given for the erection of the memorial. Following the program, the tablet was dedicated on the campus by John R. McEwen, who made suitable remarks.
After this, the students met in the auditorium, where the Klickitat Academy Students' Association was formed as a permanent organization, which is to meet annually for a good time, renew friendships and enjoy the memories of the old days. A banquet will be given each meeting.
Following the forming of the organization, the students, their wives and families enjoyed a lunch furnished by the association, after which most all were called upon to make a talk on academy days, render episodes and the relation of adventures that happened to many then.
The meeting broke up at midnight, and everyone was satisfied a most pleasant evening was spent.
A number of the old students were present who came from quite a distance. Among them from outside the county were Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Duncan of The Dalles, J.I. Wherry of Spokane, E.E. Bennett of Vancouver, Wash., G.T. Stackhouse of Seattle, Maud Humphrey of Mabton, L.J. Hale, of Baker, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Bert Graham of Pasco. These people all came for the special purpose of the attending the meeting. Besides, there was a large number who live at places in the county, other than Goldendale, who were present.
The following is a list of those who joined the association:
C.E. Crooks, E.E. Bennett, L.A. Duncan, Gertrude L. Duncan, H.O. Allyn, C.R. West, Ernest D. Roe, G.T. Stackhouse, Harvey O. Barnes, Vina Wherry Troxel, Mrs. Vearl Baker, Geo. M. ACADEMY STUDENTS TO ERECT MARKER AT TIMBLIN GRAVE

At a meeting of the former students of the Klickitat Academy held last week, plans were set up for the permanent care on the plot in the Odd Fellows cemetery in respect to the Timblins and where Lucille Timblin is interred.
Charles Timblin and wife came to Goldendale in 1898 to assume charge of the Klickitat Academy, which opened that year. Mrs. Timblin was music leader and conducted public speaking classes Timblin remained in Goldendale until 1907, going to the U. of W. as an instructor. He later became vice-president and general manager of the Western Union Life Insurance company.
In asking for contributions it is hoped that enough funds will be received to take care of the upkeep of the lots as well as erecting a suitable grave marker.
The old students and friends are being called upon for this purpose and those wishing to contribute are asked to send their donations to Mrs. W.D. Norris or Mrs. Mary Spoon, Goldendale.
