COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM HELD AT TROUT LAKE SCHOOL LAST THURSDAY

TROUT LAKE, May 31, (Special) -- Commencement exercises were held last Thursday evening at the Trout Lake school when four seniors and thirteen eighth graders received their diplomas.  The guest speaker was Mr. H. M. Crooks of Hood River who gave an address on “Building a New World.” Stanley Schmid was valedictorian and June Maxwell was salutatorian.  The four seniors were Lorene Stoller, June Maxwell, Stanley Schmid and Thomas Raymond.  The eighth-grade class was Phyllis Barney, Robert Blouin, Theodore Brown, Elinor Elmer, Richard Hollenbeck, Ronald Hollenbeck, David Cole, Dean Murphy, Carol Peterson, Claudia Quackenbush, Janice Schmid,  Dolores Strike and Lewis Frey II.
            June Maxwell received a scholarship from the Pacific Lutheran College and Stanley Schmid received a scholarship from the Washington State College.  Mr. Don Lewis presented the Legion Award for Boys State to Tony Azure with Eugene Murphy as alternate.  Mrs. Melvin Wilson presented the Auxiliary Award for Girls State to Arlene Elmer with Nancy Woodruff as alternate.  The Antlers Club award was presented by Mr. Whitson to the most outstanding eighth grade pupil.  Janice Fae Schmid received the first award and Elinor Elmer's second and Dolores Strike third.  There were eighteen pupils who received certificates for being neither absent or tardy for the year.  Coach Lewis presented athletic awards and letters to the following seventeen students: Eugene Murphy, Arlene Elmer, Bonita Conklin, Bernice Peterson, Jimmy Whorrall, Orville Elmer, Frank Turner, Dean Murphy, William Barney, Ronnie Hollenbeck, Teddy Brown, Tony Azure, Dick Carr, Tommy Raymond, Harvey Dodge and Frank Stoller.  Tommy Raymond, Lorene Stoller and June Maxwell received awards for outstanding office work from Mr. Ingman.

ARLENE ELMER TO ATTEND GIRLS STATE

Arlene Elmer has been chosen by Trout Lake high school and David Woodruff Unit No. 192, American Legion Auxiliary, to be sent to the fourth annual Girls State sponsored by the Department of Washington, to be held at Ellensburg, June 24th to July 3rd.
            She will be one of several hundred girls from all over the state, to attend.  Last year 211 girls were registered.
            This ten day program which is directed by Mrs. R. L. Goodfellow, Cathlamet, will be staged on the campus of Central Washington College of Education at Ellensburg.
            Purpose of the Girls State is to provide citizenship training for girls of high school age.  The aim of the American Legion Auxiliary in this program is to develop a better understanding of the construction, purpose and operation of our democratic form of government.  It is non-partisan and non-political.
            Service clubs, high schools and civic organizations are joining with the auxiliary in the sponsorship of these girls.
            Only girls who have completed three or three and a half years of high school work are eligible.  They are chosen for their leadership, character, courage, honesty, cooperativeness, loyalty and physical fitness.
