TROUT LAKE GIRL AT GIRLS’ STATE
Julia Johnson of Trout Lake High School has been selected to
represent Unit No. 192 of the American Legion Auxiliary at Evergreen Girls State
to be held at the Central Washington College of Education, Ellensburg, from June
23rd to July 1st.
There will be approximately 250 girls at the Girls State, besides
the staff and Senior and Junior Counselors. This is a nationwide program,
sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and is a camp for nine days, where a
well-planned program on Americanism and Citizenship is brought to the girls. It
is a non-partisan and non-political attempt to teach and inoculate in the youth
of America, a love of God, Home and Country. It develops a better understanding
of the construction, the purpose and operation of our democratic form of
government by combining the theory of government, as taught in our high schools,
with the actual practice of government which participation in Girls’ State
provides.
The girls have their own city, county and state government. They
elect their own city, county and state officials. They learn the duties of
various public offices, their functions, their limitations and their powers.
They have their own legislature, introduce and argue their own bills. They make
and enforce ordinances regulating their cities, and conduct their own
elections. They have their own police force, court of law, and administer
justice. The girl has a chance to learn for herself that her government is just
what she makes it.
