MT. ADAMS ELKS NAME WINNERS OF ’59 SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Mt. Adams Elks Lodge 1868 of White Salmon this week announced the award of its
$200 scholarship to Harvey E. Thompson of Goldendale. Second honor for the
outstanding graduate in Klickitat and Skamania County went to Suzanne Joy
Burdett of Trout Lake.
Both are valedictorians of their class. Harvey is a straight “A” student
with a 3.967 grade point average. Suzanne's average is 3.89. What's more, she
is completing high school in three years instead of four.
Harvey has been student-body president, sports editor, student director of
the high school band and outstanding in 4H and FFA work. He held leading roles
in the junior and senior plays and was chosen by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs as
their 1958 delegate to the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth.
He has a special aptitude for science and mathematics, learning to type
well by himself and intends to become a pharmacist. His teachers described him
as “versatile and sincere.” In summer he works on his parents ranch.
Suzanne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Burdett, is active in church
work, Rainbow, school plays, basketball and volleyball, and was photo editor of
the Trout Lake annual.
She plans to work in a Seattle tea room next summer to earn money to attend
Whitman College in the fall. Suzanne is not sure of her major, but is
interested in psychology and journalism.
Mt. Adams Elks Lodge has nominated both winners for state recognition.
Last year's winner, Michele Monte of Stevenson, placed third in the nation
and received over $2000 in scholarships toward her education at Willamette
University where she is a student.
