STUDENTS GET AWARDS FOR STUDIES, SPORTS

            The school year is winding down, and the students are being acknowledged for their achievements made in the last nine months.  The High School Awards Banquet brought out the best of our young people.  Awards were given in the fields of academic studies, sports and school spirit.
            Fred Yancey of the English department recognized Michelle Allaway, Erin Nelson, John Denslinger, Mark Reynolds, Beth Longanecker and Heidi Edwards for their superior efforts.  Rollie Parrish and Jeff LeBert received the Presidential Academic Achievement Award.
            Tom Nitz, head of the history department, congratulated Mark Reynolds as the outstanding history student, with a subject grade point average of 3.6.
            Rollie Parrish and Jeff LeBert shared the title of best math student, as picked by their teacher, Mary Landstrom.  Mrs. Landstrom acknowledged the Math Team members, who won third place in district; Rollie, Jeff, Heidi Edwards, Jason Walters, Meshell Allaway, Mark Reynolds, John Denslinger, and Scott Parrish.
            Science teacher Dennis White named Tim Sherburne as out-standing biology student, Rollie Parrish and Jeff Weber as out-standing physics students and gave Jeff the title of senior student with the highest grades.
            White handed trophies to the very successful Knowledge Bowl Team members: Michelle Smith, Mark Reynolds, Eddie Strike and Rollie Parrish.  Reynolds won the title of most valuable player for responding with the most accurate answers during competition.  B+ team members Jason Walters, Paul Van Laar, Peter Ulriksen, Tim Sherburne, Scott Parrish and Robbie Fischer received certificates.
            Jerry Woods chose Jesse Johnson and Dave Irish for the best students at mechanical drawings in the industrial arts.  Johnson, Irish and Heidi Edwards received awards for their performance in woodshop.
            Rollie Parrish was honored by teacher Linda Peterson for accomplishing two years of Spanish in one year.
            Superintendent Jack Brase congratulated Rollie Parrish, Jeff LeBert, Mark Reynolds, Beth Longanecker, Scott Parrish, Meshell Allaway, Heidi Edwards, Jesse Johnson and Erin Nelson for making the Honor Roll all year.
            Wendy Smith won the title of most inspirational player on the volleyball team.  Most improved went to Erin Nelson.  Most valuable player and captain was Michelle Smith.  Missy Strike was chosen as having the best defense.
            Peter Ulricksen was most valuable player of the soccer team.  John Denslinger was chosen as having the best defense and Scott Parrish chosen as having the best defense.  Most improved players were Rollie Parrish and Mark Reynolds.
            Track team member Page Warner proved to be most valuable player and most inspirational.  Most valuable male member was given to John Denslinger.  Robbie Fischer was titled most improved.  Shawn Johnson was congratulated for qualifying for participation in the state discus throw held last weekend.
            The girls basketball team will be real winners in the years to come.  Most valuable and team captain was Missy Strike.  Meshell Allaway was high rebounder.  Debbie Wogan was chosen as the most inspirational player.  Most improved was Wendy Smith.  Page Warner and Dawn Golphenee shared the best defense award.
            On the junior varsity boys basketball team, Peter Ulricksen was most improved player and Jimmy Massey was most valuable.
            The best defense title went to Robert Koenig, and Jason Walters was chosen most inspirational player.
            Varsity captain was Jim Longanecker and co-captain was Eddie strike.  Varsity best defense went to John Denslinger, most valuable player to David Irish.  Matt Golphenee was most improved and Scott Parrish was most inspirational.
            Don Warner of the Booster Club congratulated Beth Longanecker, chosen to receive Patricia Davis Spirit Award.  John Denslinger and Missy Strike were picked for Booster Club Spirit.
            The Girls League Awards are voted on by all of the high school students.  Best teacher was Jerry Wood.  Coach of the Year was Dick Steward.  Wendy Smith and John Denslinger were chosen as having the most school spirit.  Students chosen as most likely to succeed were Rollie Parrish and Michelle Smith.
            Jack Brase acknowledged John Denslinger, Mark Reynolds, Pam Pearson, Minny Strike, Rollie Parrish, Peter Ulricksen and Heidi Edwards as ‘Students of the Month.”
            Jan and Dick Denslinger, Ken and Julie Longanecker and Tim and Bonnie Reynolds were thanked for sponsoring Peter Ulricksen, our foreign exchange student.
            A special plaque was given to Jerry Walker for his six years as a member of the school board.  Other members include Linda Williams, Carl Allaway, Ben Van Laar, Dick Denslinger and newly appointed member Steve Koenig.
            Graduation for the high school class of 1986 will be Friday, June 6, at 8 p.m. in the school gym.  Class members include Michelle Smith, Jim Longanecker, Rollie Parrish, Eddie Strike and Jeff LeBert.  The eighth grade class will also be graduated the same evening.
