TROUT LAKE'S INDUSTRIAL OUTLOOK - Mr. W.C. Duniway, on the editorial staff of the Oregonian, and who is now recreating out at Trout Lake, states that the Trout Lake section is of a practical value aside from being a splendid summer resort. A number of ranches have been cleared of timber and are producing fine crops of clover and timothy. The settlers organized the Trout Lake Cheese & Butter Company, a joint stock concern, and installed a plant for cheese-making last May, and butter will also be made, beginning October 1. Mr. Townsend, the creamery man of Portland, makes and markets the cheese for 2 cents a pound, leaving a margin of profit to the stockholders which is most satisfactory. By separators, in a season $50 per cow was made by settlers, while with the cheese factory it is about $60. Before 22 to 25 cents was realized for butter fat while now 27 to 30 cents is obtained. Two crops of clover are cut with little irrigation, while timothy gives heavy yields without watering. The dairying outlook is bright. Fruit will do as well there as at Hood River. With millions of feet of fir and pine timber standing, and the White Salmon River affording a cheap and easy outlet, there will be big money made in logging.
