UNDERWOOD FRUIT & WHSE. CO. INCREASES COLD STORAGE
Larger Pear Crop Calls For More Pre-Cooling Space – 1930 Fruit Returns Given In
This Issue
The Underwood Fruit & Warehouse Co. this week publishes its annual returns of
pools on apples and pears handled from their big cold storage plant at
Underwood. The 1930 pool returns are given in comparison with those of 1929,
1928 and 1927. These returns are net to the grower, f.o.b. cars, after all
charges for storage, pre-cooling, strapping, inspection, insurance and selling
charges are deducted. All varieties, sizes and grades of apples and pears
handled, are given, which should be most interesting reading to all fruit
growers of this district.
The cold storage plant of this company is the largest
in the White Salmon valley with a cold storage capacity of 160 cars. Because of
the increased pear production in this district, the company is now adding to its
cold storage space so as to be able to handle about 30 more cars of fruit.
Every year more improvements are made to the Underwood plant and now the
refrigeration capacity is being increased 40 per cent to give still better
service to growers and so that all fruit received can be pre-cooled at once and
kept in the best of condition for further handling.
The added investment from year to year to this large
cold storage plant shows that the owners have great faith in the fruit industry
of the White Salmon valley and that eventually fruit will come to its own.
