WANT DIVISION OF COUNTY
Guler, Wash., June 6. - A division of Klickitat County
is claiming the attention of the more progressive citizens of the west end.
They claim that this part of the county is not represented in the county
politics as it should be and in many ways propose that the best way out of
difficulties is to divide the county.
One argument in favor of division is that Goldendale,
the county seat of Klickitat County, is too far away for the citizens of
this end to reach without too much time and expense when business is to be
transacted at the courthouse.
Another reason given in favor of division is that the
business affairs of the county, it is alleged by the prime movers in the
subject, are not conducted in as good a business manner as is wished. Numerous
other reasons are given for the division of the county, and these will be
exploited from now until the next session of the legislature.
The west end of Klickitat County has as much assessable
property as the east end, and the taxes add materially in the payment of
county expenses. The west end citizens are amassing considerable wealth,
and thus consider they should have something to say when it comes election
time instead of being allowed a county commissioner or some minor office
that has no salary to speak of attached.
