History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
WILLIAM EHRCK AND FAMILY 1879
William Ehrck was born in Germany, January 1, 1845. He
was educated in the public schools of that country and then learned the mason's
trade. In 1871 he married Caroline Wilkins of Germany and together they came
to the United States the following year. They stopped first in Chicago, remaining
there two years, they then moved to Iowa, from there they came to Oregon
in 1879. Mr. Ehrck found employment at his trade first at Portland and then
at The Dalles, from the latter place he moved to Hood River taking a homestead
on the East Side. Here through years of toil and management the land was
changed from its natural wildness and is today a comfortable and attractive
home with a valuable income from its orchards.
Mr. and Mrs. Ehrck are both consistent members of the
Lutheran Church. He died first but she did not long survive him. In this
home five children grew to manhood and womanhood and took their places as
valued citizens of our community.
Of the five children Otto and William reside on the home
farm, Lizzie is now Mrs. Eggert the wife of a neighboring farmer, Emma lives
in San Francisco, the wife of Harry Imlay and Marie now Mrs. Claud McCoy
resides in Portland.
