History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
W.C. CLELLAND AND FAMILY
D.M.C.
Data furnished by Mrs. Clelland
Willis Graham Clelland was born in Hillsplace, Indiana,
March 25, 1854. He grew to manhood and received his education in his native
state. In 1882 he came to Oregon and located a homestead on the east side
of Hood River, about two and one half miles south of the town, in what is
now known as the Pine Grove district.
In 1888 he was married to Miss Minnie Rand, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. M.V. Rand, who also lived on the east side of Hood River,
and were neighbors of Mr. Clelland. Mr. and Mrs. Clelland remained on their
homestead until 1894 when they sold and moved to Eastern Oregon, where they
remained about three years, going from there to California.
In 1899 they returned to Oregon, locating at University
Park, in Portland. Here they built themselves a good home and were living
there at the time of his death, which occurred on January 16, 1916, from
heart trouble. He had long been a sufferer, and his death was not unexpected
to himself and his family, but was startling to many of his friends who
considered him to be in the prime of life.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son and daughter. The daughter
is married. Mrs. Clelland and her son occupy their home at University Park
near the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rand. Mrs. Clelland is of a retiring
disposition but highly esteemed by those who know her best.
