WILLIAM LEWIS CLARK D.M.C.
William Lewis Clark, only son of Newton and Mary Hill
Clark, began life in Baraboo, Wisconsin, May 19, 1867.
He came to Hood River in 1878 and received most of his
education in the Barrett school at that place.
His father was a civil engineer of large experience and
the son was employed by him, and received a thorough training in that branch
of work. At the age of nineteen he was employed on the N.PR.R. under John
Q. Jamison, assistant engineer of the N.P.R.R. at Stampede tunnel. Later
he worked for the S.P.R.R. and in 1893 at the Cascade Locks under G.W.
Brown.
In July 1900 he accepted a position as district city
engineer of Portland. Later he returned to Hood River, engaging, with C.H
Stranahan, in the feed business.
He is known as among the most active and influential
of her enterprising citizens.
Mr. Clark was married to Miss Mary Mabee on November
6, 1898 at Middleton, Idaho. She is a most estimable woman, an enthusiastic
worker in all good works, and a valuable member of society in any
community.
They have one son, Newton Clark, Jr., who graduated from
the Lincoln High School of Portland, Oregon in June 1918.
