WORK ON THE FILL AT GRAND DALLES HAS BEEN ABANDONED
The last work on the north bank railroad near The Dalles
is about completed and is expected that Twohy Bros. will take out the shovel
within the next two or three days. The plan to keep on feeding the fill that
has been giving so much trouble has been abandoned for a time, at least,
to let it settle. It is understood that this will be only temporary, as it
is proposed to see what effect the high water will have on it and later take
up the work again.
This piece of work is supposed to have taken but 60,000
cubic yards of filling, but up to the present time more than 200,000 cubic
yards have been dumped. This has been swallowed up at the rate of about 15,000
cubic yards per month. The supposition is that this fill is situated over
an old channel of the Columbia, which has washed full of quicksand that allows
the fill to settle.
The original survey of the line called for a straight
stretch of track at this place, but owing to the sinking of the fill it was
necessary to make two two per cent curves and carry the track around. This
work has now been completed and time will be given the fill to seek its level
before the work will be again resumed. - Dalles Chronicle.
