WISHRAM RAILROAD PARK SET TO OPEN FRIDAY, OCT. 10
Dedication and Ribbon Cutting, “Train-cakes” and Coffee at 10 a.m.
It's been a long time coming. Klickitat County Commissioner Joan Frey thinks
back to the day in 1994 when an army of volunteers helped see the Great Northern
2507 steam locomotive off on a barge to Pasco. She promised residents of the
county, and particularly of Wishram, that if the locomotive were not brought to
working order as planned, it would be returned here.
It wasn't made to run. The price tag was just too high.
Fellow-commissioner Ray Thayer said she reminded the other commissioners -
regularly - of her promise.
And now at last - for once and for all - it's been
kept. The locomotive, which j returned to Wishram this summer and had a
beautiful, covered shed built for it this fall, is ready for visitors.
The County Economic Development department and the
community of Wishram plan a dedication ceremony this Friday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m.
Organizers want the ceremony to draw a big crowd, to
tell the world the 2507 is ready and to honor all the hard work and volunteer
help that have gone into creation of the railroad park.
Commissioner Frey and representatives from the Wishram
Community Council and Burlington Northern Railroad will be on hand. Speakers
from many other organizations involved in the project have also been invited.
Refreshments will be served. It is said that residents
of Wishram are baking "train cakes" for the occasion. - Sam Lowry
