Harkens--Recently acquired old Family Bible at a yard sale. It has a wealth of information concerning the Harkens(Harkins) family of the Pickens County Area. Most are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery according to the obituary clippings. Would dearly love to share this information with anyone seeking their ancestors. Beginning entries include: Charles S. Harkens b10-6-1830, d3-12-1908, wife Minerva Pickens Hood Harkins b5-26-1834, d1-25-1914 (daughter of Archibald & Mary Miller Hood). Their children (1) Mary Christian b4-8-1857, d1-13-42, (2) Henry Clifton b3-9-1860, (3) Archibald Hood, b8-30-1862, (4) Samuel Walter b3-2-1866, d4-17-1933, (5) Anna Anderson (married Thomas V Stirling) b6-26-1868, d1-15-1903, (6) Ella Pickens, b4-19-1872, d7-6-1900. There are also listings for grandchildren of Charles & Minerva. The Bible was published in 1870 & births, deaths, marriages etc are handwritten, some very old pictures were also found tucked between pages. Some of the newspaper obituaries are also very informative, especially the one on Ella Pickens Harkens, it goes into quite a bit of detail describing her life, education (Tuscaloosa Female College), where she taught music etc. If you would like more of these entries for you archives, please feel free to contact me. James was killed at the Boyd School house at a court hearing ,( on old Empire road . in Empire Al. Walker co.) Sylvester was hit in the head with an axe. Herlong--My great uncle, Vastine Andrew Herlong II was allegedly murdered in Manistee (a sawmill town in Monroe county which no longer exists) in December of 1908. Hooper, Danley, Harkness--I am trying to locate information on a Hooper whose first name may have been N B. He is believed to have been born in 1833. He had a sister named Eliza Jane who was born in 1835. She later married Jim Danley. We are not sure if there were other siblings. The last we have is they probably came from Coffee Alabama.
