MADDOX-- Looking for earlier history of family of Thomas Sumpter MADDOX, b. 10/11/1872 ( or possibly 5 to 10 yrs earlier), in East Brewton, AL d. 11/28/1952 in Mobile, AL. Had 4/5 brothers: Yancy, Mitt, Jim, and ?.Had 5 sisters, only name known is Julia and possibly Florence. Married to Eleanor Beatrice STILL, (possibly Native American),. b. 2/16/1884, d. 1920. It had been said that the one of his ancestors who had come into the southeastern part of Alabama in a covered wagon was a large red headed fellow. Also an ancestor supposedly was forced out of the Colonies and went to live in the Louisiana Territory. Because of his great knowledge of the area he was hired to guide Andrew Jackson through the swamps to New Orleans (War of 1812). As a result of his help he was granted a full pardon and returned to his home, which we suppose wasSE Alabama, but we don't know his name or where he fits into the lineage. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Please contact at jlm.fgc@worldnet.att.net

According to MANNING/SESSIONS family history, ca 1887/1888 Ira and Tamsey were traveling by river boat while en route from AL to AR. Ira carried all of the family money on him even though Tamsey had warned him that it could be dangerous to do so. At some point during the trip, Ira was murdered, robbed and his body thrown overboard into the river. (Arkansas River? Mississippi River?) Some time after reaching AR, Tamsey remarried to Charles Layfette SCHROPSHIRE and had three more children: (1) Willis Layfette b. Nov. 20, 1891 (2) Rosette (?) (3) Mae (?) If the story about Ira (Will?) and Tamsey is true, that would explain why it's been so difficult to find any info. I tend to believe that it is true because I've been in contact with some of my elderly Manning cousins who say that they were personally told the story by Tamsey herself. If anyone can shed any light on this family please contact me. Wesley PARKER <wesparker@juno.com>

McCARTY--I am trying to find someone with a copy of "Early Settlers of Alabama" by Col. SAUNDERS, willing to do a look up for me. I have been told that there is a listing for my GGgrandfather John William McCARTY (born abt 1821 in TN)and his wife Lucretia (born about 1819) in this publication. Ken Williams, Londonderry, Northern Ireland--Email: willy@iol.ie
McCARTY, William b. abt 1785/87 in S.C. marr. Jane (Anderson?) BROWN, They came to AL. with family and married in AL abt 1818/19, probably in Jefferson Co. He was the purported son of Michael McCARTY, a Rev. Soldier, who is supposedly buried in Jefferson Co. and a stone with his name (spelled McCARTNEY), is located in front of the Public Library in Birmingham, commemorating the Rev. Soldiers of the area. as was the name, of the father, of Jane, John BROWN. She being a dau. by his first wife. "Betty" CRAWFORD (supposedly of Indian blood whose Indian name was "Red Deer" Have seen no "proof" of this statement. John BROWN was the son of Andrew BROWN, who also served as a soldier in the Rev. War. John served with his father. He married again after the death of Betty to Elizabeth Jane STEPHENSON, who drew a widow's pension on him. In all, John had 17 children by both of his wives. If you are related to any of these folks and would like to share info, I would be happy to hear from you. I have a lot of data collected over the last 30 years. Thank you, Sue Ashby. Researching McGOWAN/McGOWEN Family which moved from Hyde Co., N.C. to White Co., TN in 1819. By 1840, two of the sons, Samuel McGowen (c1808-c1851) and Walker McGowen (b.c.1818) moved to Marion Co., AL with their families. Samuel was dead by 1860 and his widow, Sarah (MARKHAM) McGowan was living nearby in Walker Co., AL, near other Markhams. Believe they may have moved to Mississippi and later to Texas as their son Jesse A. was living in Hill Co., TX by 1870. Have lost track of the family of Walker & Jane McGowen, although one of their sons, James A. McGowan was back in Marion Co., AL in 1880. These McGOWENS may have been members of a religious group which moved from White Co., TN to the Marion/Walker Co., AL area around 1840 and also included MARKHAMS, GIBBS and MAYS, among other families. Would like to learn about this religious group. Any and all assistance will be appreciated. John B. McGowan, 209 McLean St., Laurinburg, NC 28352-3732, jmack@nconline.com
