CLIFTON, SANFORD, TODD, STRICKLAND, OSBURN --I am searching for ancestors and descendants of the following surnames: My maternal great-great grandfather was John Wesley CLIFTON born about 1813 in South Carolina; died June 9, 1851 in Fayette County, Alabama; married Nancy FREEMAN abt 1845 in Fayette County, Alabama. They had the following children that I have knowledge of: James A. b.January 14, 1846; d. October 28, 1848, Sarah Ann b. September 2, 1848; d.February 1, 1914 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi and William Jasper CLIFTON (my great grandfather) b. February 22, 1851; d. September 18, 1898 in Pickens County, Alabama. It is thought that all three of the children of John Wesley CLIFTON and Nancy FREEMAN were born in Fayette County, Alabama. William Jasper CLIFTON married a Mary Malissie/Malissa TODD/OSBURN abt. 1869 in Fayette County, Alabama. I cannot answer the question of the two different surnames of Mary Malissie. Four different grandchildren all state that her name was TODD while the marriage records that I and two others have been able to locate show the surname as OSBURN. I am wondering if she may have been married prior to her marrying William Jasper CLIFTON. Mary Malissie is buried at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Fayette County. It has been stated by some, without proof that William Jasper was buried at Andrews Chapel in Pickens County. It has also been stated that he was buried at Mount Pleasant, here again without proof as there is no marker for him at Mount Pleasant and I don't know whether there is one at Andrews Chapel. William Jasper CLIFTON and Mary Malissie TODD/OSBURN had five children, all thought to have been born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Among them was, William Ganaway CLIFTON (my grandfather) b. March 17, 1875; d. May 11, 1956 in Birmingham, Alabama; married Willie Aretta SANFORD January 30, 1895 in Fayette County, Alabama. Willie Aretta SANFORD had parents John Rufus (Rufe) SANFORD and Emma TODD/STRICKLAND, his second marriage. Here again is a question of surnames and I am wondering also if Emma may have been married previously. My grandparents were first cousins when married. In my opinion, for this to have been so, their respective mothers had to be sisters with the same surname at one time. Here again also four of the grandchildren state that their surname was TODD while others and the marriage records I have been able to find state OSBURN and STRICKLAND as the surnames. I would tremendously appreciate any help in learning the facts of the surnames of both my maternal great-grandmothers. I would also appreciate any information anyone might have regarding the surnames in this family. I am willing to share such information as I have with anyone who is connected. For more information, contact Dennis L. Gurley at dlgjmk@bellsouth.net or at 1768 Warrior-Jasper Road, Warrior, Alabama 35180.
