I want to offer a breif biography for a certain member of our family each month, past or present. please send me any information that will update our family tree page(s) and information that will help others keep current on ou and yours!
May is always a busy month for educators!!! We have our job related banquets, ceremonies, and graduations to attend, plus those of our own family members. This month is extra special because our daughter, Carole, and our niece, Betsy are reaching a major mile stone in their young lives. Carole will be receiving an Accelerated Reader award and Betsy will be graduating from Massac County High School. Time does fly, doesn’t it?
Mom's birthday is this month, as well as mother's day. The house will be dried in by the 14th and we should begin to see plumbing and wiring soon after. My "barn" project has been placed on hold, due to bush hogging, mowing, weed eating, pruning, raking, and resting.
Nathaniel "Than" Abernathy Young, son of Archibald Smith Young, was born 14 April 1841 in Pulaski, TN. Than was a confederate soldier who enlisted with his brother Napoleon "Pole" Young on 19 October 1861 at Camp Trousdale. On 16 February 1862, the two were captured at Fort Donelson and imprisoned at Ft. Morton, Indiana. They were sent for prisoner exchange on 11 September 1862. On 23 January 1864 Than was promoted to 2nd Lt. Than's regiment was consolidated with other Tennessee units in April 1865; military records show that Than as a private when discharged from at Greensboro, N.C. on 01 May 1865. He was shot in the right arm in battle and lost use of that arm. Than's only comment about the Civil War was, "that a lot of good men went down."
After the war Than married his second cousin, Medora Jane Harwell, at William A. Young's home in Giles County on 23 September 1866. Medora was born in Giles Co. on 17 March 1847, daughter of Gardner M. Harwell and Mary Smith. Medora's grandfather was Robert Smith, a younger brother of Than's grandmother, Nancy Smith. Witnesses at the wedding were the bride's uncle, Leonidas Smith, and his wife, Addie. Than was a farmer and a merchant. He bought his Pulaski home on Washington Street from his son Guy, and died there on 01 October 1919. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery. his home was sold and Medora moved in with her daughter Cordie. When Medora had a stroke and became paralyzed, she moved in with Guy on East Jefferson Street. She died in his home on 26 January 1927. She is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
