Note that markers 385A, 385B and 439 shown in red are known to mutate faster than the other 9. One step mutations in these 3 markers can occur and should not be considered proof of being unrelated. Expanding the marker tests to 25 or 37 markers should help prove relatedness in cases where the mutations are all in a red marker. Scientists are unsure how fast these 3 markers mutate as it appears to be different in various families. This webpage reports 12 markers only. For more indepth marker results for the Spence Surname Project, see the FTDNA webpage link at the bottom of page. We also are inviting all interested Spence males to participate! See the project link at the bottom of this page to join the Spence surname project.
We need every Spence line to PARTICIPATE IN THIS DNA PROJECT! IF YOU SEE YOUR ANCESTOR LISTED with SAMPLES NEEDED, and you are a male with the surname SPENCE/SPENS/SPENSE inherited from your father's male Spence ancestors, PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING OUR EFFORTS IN THIS PROJECT BECAUSE IT HELPS ALL OF US.

CRS is descended from Burwell's son Lewis, DCS from Burwell's son Drury, JDS from Burwell's son Isham, FGS from son John. The Haplogroup is R1b, the Celtic group, for CRS & FGS. DCS is I1A, a subgroup of Haplogroup I. Update: The testing was expanded to 25 markers for CRS and FGS and the results are that they match 23 out of 25 which makes them 99.9% related. The testing does not tell us who the common ancestor was for both men, but we believe at this point in time that is was Burwell.

Haplogroup is R1b, the Celtic group. Participant believes that William R. Spence was a descendant of Isaac Spence & Elizabeth Bowden Spence of Duplin Co NC and possibly related to the Pasquotank Co NC families or Isle of Wight VA families. The 12/12 match could indicate that Isaac was a son of James & Jane Bluford Spence.

Isaac resided in Thomas Co., GA circa 1830, in the area now Grady County. Some researchers believe Isaac was son of Moses Spence born 1764, or related to the Duplin County NC Spence lines. Isaac had 5 sons Bluford, Tharpe S., Jackson, William and Isaac R Spence. RS and BGS are haplogroup "I". The results indicate that there is a 4 point mismatch with the Australian branch and one marker has a 2 step mutation, making 3 of the mismatches in the fast moving red markers. This family also matches somewhat with the Jonathan Spence family of Bath Co KY with a 5 point mismatch with one 4 step mutation in the 6th marker. RS & BGS descend from Isaac's son Tharpe's son Green S. Spence. JMS descends from Isaac's son Isaac R. Spence who resided in Trinity County, TX.

FAMILY GROUP TWENTY ONE
This Australian Spence family features in the early history of the city of Port Macquarie, New South Wales. It descends from Peter Spence of Kinnoull, over the river from Perth in Scotland, and Southwark (in county Surrey but in the London metropolis). He was a wig or peruke maker who died 1807. In turn Peter seems to have been born Patrick (Patrick and Peter were interchangeable at the time in Scotland) and to come from the Spences in the nearby Carse of Gowrie region (parishes of St Maddoes, Kinfauns, Kilspindie etc, all in Perthshire). It is tentatively suggested that the oldest ancestor found so far might be George Spens who was having children in Kinfauns in the 1620s and 1630s.
