A Review of Resources
No avid genealogist would pass up the chance to use
the genealogical resources of Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, or Mormons.
The FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service, sponsored
by the Mormons, is probably the most extensive source for
genealogical research information on the Internet. There
is no cost involved in using this site. The FamilySearch
site, which gets tens of thousands of hits a day, is
faster in the very early and early morning.
Rather than detail all the features here, because the
site is growing, we will leave it to you to explore. When
you load the site, be sure to try all the choices, or you
might miss something important. Don't forget to choose
the HELP links on each page that explain how to use the
site in careful detail. You need to have JavaScript
enabled for some features of this site.
Some of the searchable resources are the Ancestral
File with over 35 million names organized into families
and pedigrees, and the International Genealogical Index
with over 360 million names extracted from vital records
from the British Isles, North America, and Finland.
I think the most important resource at the
FamilySearch site is the Family History Library Catalog,
where over 2 million rolls of microfilm and hundreds of
thousands of books and maps are described and cataloged.
Most of the microfilms in the library are of primary
documents, such as civil and church registers. The Family
History Catalog is the place where you find the numbers
for the microfilms you want to order from the Family
History Centers. You can find the location of a Family
History Center near you to access microfilm described in
the Family History Library Catalog and SourceGuide. There
is no need to go to Salt Lake City to view the microfilms.
There are friendly volunteers at the centers who want to
help you in your search.
The SourceGuides are over 150 research outlines, an
extensive glossary of word meanings, and Catalog Helper.
There is almost certainly a guide available for the state
or country you are researching.

On the library catalog main page, a frame on the right
will explain the difference between Place Search, Surname
Search, and All Search. If you are looking for microfilm
numbers for primary documents, such as civil and church
registers from a place in Mexico, choose Place Search,
and enter the name of the place when the form loads. You
may order the microfilms at the local Family History
Center for a very small fee amounting to the shipping
cost from and to the Family History Library in Salt Lake
