Jun 11, 1978 Continued on Roll Family Chart Number 526 Lyman Haycox was married first to Dessie Jones. They were married May 26, 1914 and divorced Jun 12, 1933. There were two children born to the marriage, Merl and Viola. Merl served in the Army as a Finance Officer and lived and died in Indianapolis, IN. Viola married James Lincoln, had 3 children, James, Don, and a daughter, and lived in Seymour, IN. When I last went thru the area, I could not find them listed in the phone book, and do not know where they have moved. Lyman worked for the Southern Railroad for most of his working days as a laborer and a section foreman. Before working for the railroad, he held several other jobs. The one I recall hearing about was during the depression when he and Mom managed the old hotel in Marengo, now long gone. I remember this so well because, as a child, I played with the ledger book where Mom and Dad had kept their accounts, and they told me it was a record of what people owed them, but I am sure it was never paid. One old gentleman by the name of "Logan" made an effort. He ran the chair plane at the English Reunion, and would let me on free as long as he recognized me. I remembere Dad saying of the times that he had gone thru the depression without ever standing in a soup line, and I remember Mom telling of how it was often necessary to add more water to the soup in order to be able to feed someone in need. I do not remember Dad as being a large man physically, but he was a very strong man. As an employee of the railroad, he had access to used railroad ties which we used for fuel and for other purposes. It was not unusual for him to pick up a tie, center it on his shoulder, and walk off with it. Lyman and Lula were married by Rev Otho Jackson. At Mom's death, we learned that we did not know her as well as we thought. I had always spelled her middle name as 'Cathleen'. Others had spelled it in other ways. Her sister, Jewell, said she was named for her Aunt Catherine. Her birth record, marriage record, and social security card show only Lula. Her mother had recorded her name in her family bible as 'Lula Catheline' and that was the name she used on here insurance policies, and so that is the name I have preserved here. From A Twentieth Century History of Crawford County, Indiana by H. O. "Whitey" Jones Lyman Haycox, 62, of near Temple, was killed instantly and four of his children were injured in a spectacular auto accident on a county road a half-mile south of English on August 10, 1956. The wreck occurred when the brakes on the family auto, driven by 16-year-old Lloyd, failed on a downhill grade. The car went over an embankment and crashed into a stone cliff. Haycox (Lyman) died of a crushed chest and fractured skull. The driver was only slightly injured and was released from the Harrison County Hospital two days later. the other children were taken to St Anthony Hospital in Louisville. Rita, 10, suffered internal injuries, a skull fracture and broken arm, and remained in a coma for several days. Kenneth, 6, had a fractured left leg. Kevin, 4, had a crushed and fractured right leg. All recovered. He was in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor Attack. Later, he served on Guadalcanal and later still with Merrill's Marauders in the China Burma area. He was badly wounded during this period and earned the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross (America's second highest award for heroism in combat). He also was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Campaign Stars, American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Campaign Star, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. Throughout the remainder of his life, pieces of shrapnel from his battle experiences worked its way out of his body. In addition to his wounds, he contacted Malaria Fever, and had one lung removed. After leaving the service, Russell farmed in Crawford Co, IN, near the cemetery where he is buried. This farm was the same one on which he and several of the other Wellman children were born. He is buried at Providence Cemetery near English. His Army serial number was 6985041. (HLH, 1985) The following newspaper clippings concerning Russell Glendon Wellman were furnished by Gladys Ruby Wellman Longest. (Believed to have been published by the Crawford County Democrat, circa 1944) FORMER MERRILL MARAUDER NOW AT BAAF From Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal to Merrill's Marauders and the Battle of Burma sounds like a saga of the war against the Japs. It is, and it is also the story of Cpl. Russell Wellman, Squadron C-1, expert combat infantryman, ex-Marauder, now of the Army Air Forces and BAAF. In May of 1943, Wellman, a combat veteran already, and a number of other men who qualified as "experienced combat men", volunteered while on Guadalcanal for a special outfit being formed to do an especially tough job. What the job was going to be they didn't know; that it would be tough they could understand, but the fact that the outfit was forming in the States and joining it meant a free trip to the U.S. proved to be very attractive. Wellman joined. The special outfit proved to be the now almost legendary "Merrill's Marauders". Their objective, Burma. Three months after hitting the states, Wellman was going over again. This time it was India. The Marauders were sent to a British Indian jungle camp where they were given intense preparations for the invasion of Burma. They had a few bad moments when somebody started talking parachutes, a few worse when they made a couple of practice jumps. Somebody said "If I'd wanted the paratroops, I'd have joined the paratroops." Some of the other things that were said were less quotable, Wellman recalls. On Jan 15, 1944, "A" Battalion moved out on the Ledo Road. 120 miles to the south, "B" Battalion had tangled with the Japs, had been surrounded and cut off from all water and supplies for 12 days. Wellman's battalion walked three days and nights to get to them. They cut their way through a jungle full of Jap troops and rescued B Battalion. The Marauders then reformed to move on Myitkyina, the main Jap supply base in Northern Burma. Filtering through the jungle in small parties. guided by native troops, chopping their way through steaming under-growth, following streams as the path of least resistance, Merrill's Marauders moved on the airfield at Myitkyina, 200 miles away. In a sudden savage onslaught, the Marauders took the field and opened it to Stillwell's troops. The battle for Burma was on in earnest. The Marauders were flown back to India. They had done their job, had driven the opening wedge. A month later, Wellman was called out of a hospital in India to fight for the city of Myitkyina. There the Japs hung on stubbornly and it took Merrill's men six weeks to fight their way into the place. On July 28, two days before Myitkyina fell, Wellman was hit during a frontal assault on the city. He was struck in the ROLL FAMILY CHART NUMBER 449 (CONTINUED) lung, stomach, and liver by machine gun bullets, and they had to dig 22 pieces of shrapnel out of his back. Myitkyina had been costly to the Marauders, but hey ran up a score of 45 Japs for every Marauder. The city had fallen and they moved on to Bhamo and (illegible). Wellman was out, however. Flown to a hospital in India, he moved slowly back to the states. After a series of redistribution centers and hospitals, he arrived a Blackland on February 24, where he has been assigned to Line Service in the Motor Pool. Wellman is an English, Indiana man who has been in the Army since 1939. He was stationed at Wheeler field, Hawaii when the Japs made their sudden and murderous attack on Pearl Harbor. Wellman remembers the shock of that occurrence and some of the queer reactions to it. A man in his outfit, for some reason he was at a loss to explain later, rushed to his barracks and changed from civilian clothes into his class A uniform before manning a machine gun on the roof. Guadalcanal was Wellman's next stop. He was with the first infantry outfit to go to the relief of the Marines in that bloody jungle battle, where the Japs got their first bitter taste of defeat. He stayed on Guadalcanal for about four months before his move to join the Marauders. The following article is believed to have been published in the Crawford County Democrat, 1961 OBITUARY RUSSELL GLENDON WELLMAN FARGO - Russell Glendon Wellman, son of John R "Bee" Wellman and Martha Roll Wellman, was born September 7, 1913, in Orange County and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Louisville on May 26 at the age of 47. He married Mary Hathaway on May 9, 1944. He served in the U. S. Army from 1939 to 1944. He was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the bombing and made the horrible drive thru Burma with the Merrill's Marauders. He received "The Four Bronze Battle Stars", "The Distinguished Service Cross", and "The Purple Heart". He knew and understood the terrors, sorrows and heartaches of death but never once feared it. He had many times said, "God took care of me and saved my life when I was so badly wounded". These words proved that he believed in the Great Power of the eternal Savior. He lived a simple, Christian Life, serving his friends and neighbors in any way possible. He was a loving, devoted husband, son, brother, and friend. Survivors are his wife, mother, two brothers, Lovell, now serving in U S Army in Korea; Harold "Sonnie", of English; three sisters, Mrs Lula Haycox, of English; Mrs Calvin (Jewell) Kaiser, of Louisville, and Mrs. Dan (Gladys) Longest, of English; six nieces and seven nephews; a brother-in-law, Mandis Hathaway, and his wife and two children, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Roscoe Love, and her husband of Indianapolis. Funeral services were held at the Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Elmer Swain officiating. Burial was in the Providence cemetery, with military services conducted by a firing squad from Fort Knox, Ky. (Believed to have been published in the Crawford County Democrat, circa 1970-1975) - 25 YEARS AGO TODAY - The Distinguished Service Cross, the Armed Forces second highest decoration, has been awarded to Russell G Wellman, of English, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy near the town of Myitkyina, Burma, on July 28, 1944. He received the award after a long delay due to the loss of records. Russell's military records was apparently one of many thousand destroyed by fire at the records repository in St Louis, Mo., and so I have relied on memories and newspaper clippings to tell his story. I am still hoping to find more information about the incident for which he earned the Distinguished Service Cross. A decision by military authorities resulted in the award of the Bronze Star Medal to all soldiers who earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge during World War II. This, then, was an award Russell was not aware of, and I have included a copy in this history.
