Enlisted 11/30/1861 in A CO. 54th TN infantry. Went AWOL in December 1863 in
Tunnel Hill, GA. A William Laws, also of Clifton, enlisted at the same time
(brother?) and was discharged in Dec. 1863 due to injury (hand shot off).
So possibly, John helped William home and did not return. The 54th was consolidated later into the 48th TN (Nixon's). According to pension application (witness statement from Jerome Dillon) he enlisted in Nixon's regiment F CO. and was later transferred to Biffle's Cavalry. Surrendered in 1865 to Sherman's army in Charlotte, NC. Parents: George Laws and Frances Waller. He was married to Kitora (Kittie) Angeline Arington on Aug 1 1869 in Decatur Co. TN near Clifton.
