Ashland Artillery. --An Artillery company has been formed by Maj. Pichegru Woolfolk ? , jr., of Hanover, by volunteers from the militia of that county. It has been commissioned, and numbers sixty-five men. It is desired to increase it to one hundred and four. The commissioned officers are, Captain, Pichegru ? Woolfolk ? , jr.; 1st Lieutenant, Bernard Meredith; 2d Lieutenant, Dr. C. J. Terrill; 3d Lieutenant, James B. Gardiner. The company will rendezvous at Ashland on Monday next, and march thence to camp at Howard's Grove, near this city. The Ashland Artillery, thus bravely begun by the gallant Major ? Woolfolk, is to be uniformed by the county, and the citizens have, in addition, subscribed $5,000 to aid in its equipage. It will be, therefore, very well equipped, and will, we are sure, do honor to old Hanover for its discipline and for its heroism in the field. Woolfolk2@aol.com To : rwoolfolk@hotmail.com Subject : Samuel H.T. line information Date : Fri, 25 Oct 2002 22:41:09 EDT Reply Reply All Forward Delete Printer Friendly Version Robert, Sorry that I haven't gotten the information that you requested to you sooner. Hope it is helpful. This line of Woolfolk's, my line, is a dwindling quickly. Hope I haven't given you more here than you can swallow. Here is what I know to supplement what you already have: In 1870, Samuel H.T. is living with a J.B. Woolfolk in Meade County, Kentucky. His profession is listed as a surveyor. I have not found him in any other census just yet. He alledgely died in Paducah, Kentucky, but I have not found record of his grave just yet. His wife, Caroline (Thorton) is living w/ her son, Richard Henry, in 1870. Also residing with Richard Henry are the following, based upon the 1870 census: Amanda born 1832 (Amanda Enders) Henry born 1852 Mary E born 1855 Robert L. born 1858 (Robert Lee--my ggrandfather) Carrie born 1861 Lewis born 1865 Female born 1867 Female born 1869 Caroline born 1805 (his mother, Caroline Thorton Woolfolk) I am certain there are other kids, but just not listed on this census for whatever reason. Henry Woolfolk's obit, which you have, lists a Junius as his brother, but I can not find this guy. He supposedly married Virginia Singleton. She is also buried in the Cave Hill cemetary, but Junius is not. I also can not find anything on Lewis, except in a letter that my ggrandmother wrote. Henry Woolfolk, born 1852, married Amelia Boyle. In 1900 they are residing in Boyle County, Kentucky. No children are living w/ them. I speculate that their son, Boyle, is living with Boyle Boyle, Amelia's brother, as Boyle Woolfolk is listed as a nephew on the census. Boyle Woolfolk wrote the lyrics of the song the Kentucky Rag. If you search on the web for his name specifically, it should come up with a hit that has a picture of the music sheet. Additionally, I do believe that Boyle attended Centre College in Danville, which is consistent with the parent's locale. There is a Centre College Glee Club picture that lists a "B. Woolfolk", and I'm just betting that it is Boyle, but I have not confirmed this. Now back to Richard and Amanda. They are both buried in the Cave Hill Cemetary in Louisville, KY, as is Caroline Thorton Woolfolk. Richard Henry "RH" Woolfolk was in the steamship business. He was sometimes called Captain Woolfolk. He was part owner in the Louisville Evansville Mail Packet line. He was possibly a "big wheel" in this industry as he is listed as a pallbearer at the funeral of James White, a prominent ship builder on the Ohio River. RH was also part owner in the steamboat the J.M White. I'm currently waiting on information from the New York Historical Society files of a Mr. Henry O'Reilly. There are approximately 50 letters from an RH Woolfolk to Mr. O'Reilly. Mr. O'Reilly was a business partner of Samuel Morse, as in the "Morse" Code. Just hoping that the info I get from this is "my" RH. Sometime in the 1850's RH purchased property in Chicot County, Arkansas. He subsequently went bankrupt and lost the property. His son, Robert Lee, RL, purchased the property back in 1886, approximately 1,000 acres. It appears that he lost this property again, and repurchased it sometime in the early 1900's. He was not a good farmer and over the next 58 years, lost all but 5 acres, so the story goes. I currently have a title company in Chicot County researching the property. Now, Robert Lee married Emma Wheeler....you have this information. I can not find these folks in the 1900 census. I'm still trying to confirm dates, believe it or not, on their two sons, Robert Lee II and James Wheeler (my grandfather). Robert Lee II was part of General Pershing's staff and was out chasing Ponche Villa whenever the US gov't decided to chase Ponche Villa. I have a copy of a photo that he sent home from Texas indicating his pursuit. Robert Lee II married a Claudine Jamison, had two children, Robert Lee III and Margaret (the one who recently passed away). Robert Lee II died (date unknown) and is buried in Jackson, Mississippi. Robert Lee III married and had Robert Lee IV. Robert Lee IV is a professor at Princeton. Robert Lee III died in Austin, Texas in 1966. Well, I have probably given you more info than you wanted and not exactly what you wanted. Hope the reading was enjoyable. Always interested in anything you come across on this line as there are not alot of us. Thanks, Susan (Woolfolk Fox) Parents: Samuel Hancock T. Woolfolk and Caroline Thornton. Children were: Junius Woolfolk, Henry Enders Woolfolk, Lewis Woolfolk, Mary E Woolfolk, Robert Lee Woolfolk, Carrie Woolfolk. Dr Richard
