The
Diary of Lilla A. Goodrich (Waynick) Preface: My
grandmother, Lilla Goodrich Waynick, kept this diary from 1909-1913, at least
this is all that survives. Written on loose paper, sometimes on small scraps of
paper, the original is too faded and fragile to copy. While it does not contain
much in the way of philosophical thoughts or personal secrets it is a faithful
record of her day-to-day life. I have transcribed it as faithfully as I can so
that her descendents might have a small window into the life of a Tennessee
country girl in the early 1900’s. Only minor corrections or clarifications
have been made to increase readability. Biography Lilla
Adelle Goodrich was born September
18, 1890 in Madison County, Tennessee, the only child of Irenius Cicero (I.C.)
Goodrich (1852-1935) and Fanny
Taylor Blair (1866-1894). Her mother
died when Lilla was 4 years old and her father never remarried so her maiden
aunt, Ella Goodrich, helped to raise her. I.C.
Goodrich was also severely crippled by arthritis and blind in later years. Lilla
married my grandfather, Charles Pearl Waynick (1883-1962)
on Nov. 12, 1913. They had 3 children, Ella Kathryn Waynick, Fannie Lee Waynick and
Charles Polk Waynick. Lilla died of
cancer at age 34 on March 10, 1925. This work is for her children and her
grandchildren who never got to know her. Common
