Bynum Exell Yelton was born on 8 March 1871 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.4,5,6,1 He was the son of Francis Marion Yelton and Harriet Caroline Toney.1,2,3 Bynum E. Yelton, age 9 was listed as a son of Francis M. Yelton, age 46, in the 1880 Census of Golden Valley, Rutherford County, North Carolina.7

Bynum Exell Yelton married Amanda Hutchins, daughter of Elijah M. Hutchins and Susan Smart, on 26 December 1889 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.8 Bynum E. Yelton, age 29 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Other family members included his wife, Manda Yelton, age 28, his sons, Verney Yelton, age 8 and Bruny Yelton, age 4, his daughters, Lucy Yelton, age 9, Zancy Yelton, age 6, Ida Yelton, age 6 and Linda Yelton, age 2. Amanda has borne 6 children, 6 of whom are living.9 Bynum survived the death of his wife, Amanda (Hutchins) Yelton on 3 November 1921.5,10

Bynum Exell Yelton married Bessie (?) circa 1922.11 The following article was published in a Rutherford County, North Carolina newspaper in the 1940s.

"Do I remember my boyhood days? Well, yes I do. And I think the thing I was proudest of was the fact that my father was a Confederate veteran," said B. E. Yelton, a farmer who has risen by hard work from the depths of poverty to moderate affluence. "His name was, " he continued, "Francis Yelton. My mother's name was Harriet Toney before she married. I can't tell you anything about the war as I was born in 1871, but of course my father used to tell us children many stories about it."

The genial farmer and gentleman talked for a few minutes about the effects of the War between the States and then, returning to his youthful days, said: "My father had a farm near Sunshine and it was in an old house, a log cabin, I think it was, I was born. We were very poor and I got to go to school only three days a week, the other three days I had to work. We had only about four months of school all years, just one term in the winter time. First I went to the old Smalley school; it was built of logs and they had great big chinks in them, so big you could throw a feist dog through many of them and not hurt him. The fireplace was about six feet wide, it may have been seven. I don't remember exactly. There was always a roaring fire in it but we used to have warm feet and freezing backs."

Mr. Yelton laughed at some of his memories of school time and then added: “One time, I remember we locked out our teacher - there was only one in those days. Who was he? Why Dave Johnson, afterwards he was Clerk of the Court in Rutherfordton. Well, we locked the door, had it barred alright. There was a big window over on one side, high up, I guess it was about eight feet high. Johnson tried to climb through it but there were too many of us for him and each time we pushed him back. “No,” in response to a query, “he didn’t lick us when we let him in after keeping him out half a day.

“I had one or two more teachers. Who were they? Hulda Young was one of them, she got married afterwards. She was strick, but Dave Johnson was strickter. He did not believe in ‘sparing the rod and spoiling the child’.” Here Mr. Yelton unconsciously rubbed a portion of his anatomy and then continued: “We used to have pretty good times in school every now and then. My brothers and I walked to and from school, of course, but it wasn’t a great distance.”

“Afterwards my father moved from Sunshine to Golden Valley. Times were hard, the nearest market we had was in Shelby; there was no railroad in Rutherford County in those days. Why I remember we were so poor that we used to plow our corn with oxen. We all lived in a small one room log cabin. We ate there, we cooked there and we slept there. There wasn’t really so much work we boys could do, and ofter I’d go squirrel hunting or fishing. I liked squirrel hunting best. Then we’d go fox hunting, I used to help catch foxes and many the chases we’d have.

“You know,” said Mr. Yelton after a long pause, “When I got married my father didn’t have anything to give me. My wife and I rented some land. We worked hard and we saved a little bit. Year by year we had enough to buy some land. Now we have a comfortable six room house with modern conveniences; of course I don’t count myself rich. I suppose I’ll never be that! But we got what we worked for and I can’t complain.”.12 Bynum Exell Yelton died on 9 October 1948 in Logan Store, Rutherford County, North Carolina.4,2,13 He was buried at Pisgah Methodist Church, Rutherford County, North Carolina.5
