The tombstone says Ida Grayson, but from the census I know her middle initial was I., and she and her husband are buried next to her parents. Also, the date of birth is consistent with the census information.2

George Thomas Mangum married Mary Yelton, daughter of Jacob Yelton and Susanna Davis, circa 1866.3 Thomas Mangrum, age 33 was listed as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Mary Mangrum, age 28, Julius A. Mangrum, age 8, Jacob Mangrum, age 3 and Joseph Mangrum, age 1. Thomas reported owning no real estate, but had personal property worth $300.4 In 1880 George Thomas Mangum was a farmer.5 He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 Census of Golden Valley, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The family included his wife, Mary Mangum, age 40, his son, Jacob H.
