David Lane, age 33 was recorded as the head of a household in the 1860 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Mary Lane, age 32, Drusy Lane, age 11, Lawson Lane, age 7, Robert Lane, age 4 and Sarah Lane, age 1. David reported owning real estate worth $150 and personal property worth $125.³

Apparently both David and Mary (Earle) Lane died between 1860 and 1870, as their children were living in other families in the 1870 Census. It's possible that David died in the Civil War, but I've found no evidence of military service to date.⁴

Thomas Hutchins was born circa 1831 in North Carolina.¹ He was the son of William Hutchins and Mary Weaver.¹ Thomas Hutchins witnessed the New Tag of William Hutchins, age 55 on 28 August 1850 Broad River, Rutherford County, North Carolina.²

Thomas Hutchins married Elizabeth Smart, daughter of William Smart and Margaret Clemmens, on 3 March 1853 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.³

Thomas Hutchens, age 32 appeared as the head of a household in the 1870 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Elizabeth Hutchens, age 43, John Hutchens, age 15, Isaac Hutchens, age 9 and Alfred Hutchins, age 7. Thomas reported owning real estate worth $250.⁴
