     Walter Mitchell Guffey was born in May 1859 in North Carolina.^3,4 He was the son of John Rufus Guffey and Mary Hutchins.^1,2 Walter Guffey, age 1 was living in the household of Rufus Guffey, age 35, in the 1860 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁵ Walter Guffy, age 9 was living in the household of Mary Guffy, age 40, in the 1870 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁶ Walter M. Guffey, age 21 was listed as a son of Mary Guffey, age 54, in the 1880 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁷

Walter Mitchell Guffey married Mary Eleanor Yelton, daughter of William Jackson Yelton and Esther L. Toney, on 9 February 1882 at the residence of Joshua Toney, Logan's Store Township, Rutherford County, North Carolina.² Walt Guffee, age 41 was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Other family members included his wife, Mary Guffee, age 41, his sons, William Guffee, age 18, Weldon Guffee, age 10 and Arvill Guffee, age 6, his daughters, Ellie J. Guffee, age 7 and Dorres(?) Guffee, age 1. Mary has borne 6 children, 5 of whom are living.⁴ Walter Mitchell Guffey died on 9 April 1904.⁸ He was buried at Camp Creek Baptist Church, Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁸

Guffey, age 25, was listed as the daughter of Mary Guffey, age 54, in the 1880 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁶

Alice Guffey married William Hutchins, son of William Hutchins and Biddy Biggerstaff, on 19 December 1880 at the home of the bride, Logan's Store Township, Rutherford County, North Carolina.⁷
