Because his wife's birth year is the same (1989 for 1889) I suspect that 1889 is equally incorrect. The letter included a photocopy of a picture apparently intended (based on the background) as a Civil War remembrance. The picture looks very much like other pictures of John Basil Yelton that I have seen..
