Leonard Yelton married Rebecca Fortune on 10 May 1836 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.4 Leonard Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 2 females under 5, and 1 male under 5. This census entry is a little odd. There is no adult female in the household. Presumably all these children died before 1850, as none of them appear with Leonard and Rebecca in the 1850 Census. But where is Rebecca in 1840?5 He was named administrator of John Yelton's estate in July 1844 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. John Moorehead was Leonard's security on the administrator's bond.6 Leonard Yelton, as administrator, submitted the sale bill for John Yelton's personal property on 28 Oct 1844. A few of the more valuable items listed were a sorrel mare and colt, a bay filly, 3 head of sheep, a cow and calf, and some pigs.7 At the September Court for 1847, A. B. Long, H. Deck, and P. Whisnant were appointed a committee to settle with Leonard Yelton as administrator of John Yelton.8 The commitee met with Leonard Yelton and prepared an account, which was presented and filed at the December court in 1847.9

Leonard Yelton, age 34, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebecca Yelton, age 30, Adam Yelton, age 3 and Eve Yelton, age 1. Leonard reported owning real estate worth $850.10 He witnessed the marriage of John Hutchins and Susana Yelton on 25 October 1859 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.11,12

Lenard Yelton, age 44 was recorded as the head of a household in the 1860 Census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also living in the household were Rebeca Yelton, age 40, Adam Yelton, age 13, Lenard Yelton, age 4, Lawson Yelton, age 3 months, Mary Yelton, age 7 and Nancy Yelton, age 9. Lenard reported owning real estate worth $1200 and personal property worth $200. Also living in the household is Mary Hill, an 18 year old servant.13

Leonard Yelton died between 1860 and 1870.14

Also living in the household were Rebeca Yelton, age 30, Mira Yelton, age 5, Eliza Yelton, age 3 and Malinda Yelton, age 11 months. Henry reported owning no real estate. This family was enumerated twice within one month by the same enumerator. Given that four of the five names of family members are the same, and I haven't discovered another Henry Yelton in Rutherford County, I believe that it is the same family, even though Henry has aged two years and Rebecca has regressed five. Perhaps Rebecca provided the information the second time. I know of at least one other instance in this census where a family was enumerated twice. Even if the families moved, they should only have been counted once.6 In 1850, Henry is listed as a shoemaker in one census etnry, and as a laborer in the other.5,6 He witnessed the marriage of Sarah Horton and Pleasant Earle on 9 November 1850 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.7,8 In 1860 Henry Yelton was a cooper.9

James Yelton was born on 15 July 1749 in Stafford County, Virginia.1 He was the son of James Yelton and Isabel Hinson.1

James Yelton married Mary (?) before 1776 in Virginia. 2 James Yelton Jr. was named administrator of James Yelton's estate in 1783 in Stafford County, Virginia.3 In 1784, James Yelton first appears in the personal property tax records of Amherst County, Virginia, reporting 1 white tithable. In 1792, he first appears with 2 white tithables, implying that was the first year in which his household included another white male at least 16 years old. In 1797, John Yelton is listed separately for the first time, and James again reports 1 white tithable. In 1800, James again shows 2 white tithables, as well as 1 slave. 1801 is the last year in which James appears in the personal property tax records of Amherst County.4 James Yelton prepared an inventory of the estate of James Yelton.3 For the years 1787, 1788, 1789, 1790, and 1791, James also appears in the land tax records of Amherst County, Virginia. In each of those years, he was taxed on 100 acres of land.5,6 On 4 February 1789 in Amherst County, Virginia he voted for James Monroe.7 On 4 April 1791 he voted for Samuel Meredith in a poll for the election of delegates to represent Amherst County in the General Assembly.8 I haven't found James in the 1810 Census. According to his pension records, James was living in Iredell County, NC in 1810. There are two James Yeltons in the 1810 Census for Iredell Co, both on p. 242. One is age 16 to 26, the other 26-45. Since this James was 61, and since neither household is consistent with what little we know of his family at that time, I'm unwilling to assume that either household is his.9 He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 80-90 and 1 female 70-80. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to James, his wife, Mary (?).10 James Yelton lived with Elizabeth Henson in Pendleton County, Kentucky, on 15 August 1833.11 James Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Pendleton County, Kentucky. The household consisted of 1 male 90-100, 1 female 30-40, and 1 male 5-10. James Yelton is specifically identified as a 94 year old pensioner.12

James Yelton died circa 1842 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, James Yelton the Revolutionary War soldier (and son of James & Isabel) was most emphatically *not* the James Yelton who died in Pendleton County on 6 Sept 1838. James Yelton the Revolutionary War soldier was still living in 1840, when he appeared in the 1840 Census for Pendleton Co, KY,page 243, specifically identified as a 94 year old pensioner. He died ca. 1842, according to the records regarding the payment of his pension. As far as I have been able to learn, he did not leave a will, nor was his death recorded by the County Court as was the death of his brother William.11

Charles Henson Yelton was born on 20 June 1784 in Virginia probably in Stafford County or Amherst County.3,4 He was the son of James Yelton and Mary (?).1,2

Charles Henson Yelton married Susannah Rogers, daughter of Benjamin Rogers and Susannah (?), on 16 August 1805 in Amherst County, Virginia.5 Charles Henson Yelton was listed as the head of a household in the 1820 Census of Iredell County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 2 males under 10, 2 males age 10 to 16, 1 male age 18 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female age 10 to 16, 1 female age 26 to 45, and 1 female over 45.. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Rogers, his sons, William Yelton, Barnett C. Yelton and Charles Yelton, his daughters, Lydia Yelton and Sarah Yelton. Three persons in the household were engaged in agriculture. The census indicates the possibility of another son born between 1813 and 1818. There are also present in the household an unidentified female over 45 and an unidentified male between 18 and 26.6 On 21 September 1821 Charles Henson Yelton and Susannah Rogers lived in North Carolina.7 Charles Yelton was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1830 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 40-50, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 15-20, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 5-10, 1 male under 5, and 1 female under 5. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Rogers. Charles is immediately adjacent to his son, Barnett Yelton, in this census.8 Charles Yelton appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina. The household consisted of 1 male 50-60, 1 female 50-60, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 10-15, 1 male 10-15, and 1 male 5-10. It is likely that these individuals were, in addition to Charles, his wife, Susannah Yelton, his sons, John Pinkney Yelton, Benjamin Yelton and Wilburn S. Yelton, his daughter, Mary Yelton.9

Charles H. Yelton, age 70, was listed as the head of a household in the 1850 Census of Overton County, Tennessee. Also living in the household were Susanah Yelton, age 67 and Wilburn Yelton, age 19.4

Charles Henson Yelton died after 1860 in Tennessee.

  4. [S37] Iredell Co, NC Deed Book J :p. 64. The marriage date is estimated based on the birthdate of the oldest known child. The identification of this Robert Yelton (son of William) as the husband of Elizabeth Kersey is a hypothesis based on a number of separate pieces of evidence. Robert (son of William) must have been married prior to his marriage to Catherine Castator, since he appears in the 1820 Census with a wife (or at least an adult female) and 6 children. This can't be Catherine, as he didn't marry her until 1823. Also, his age at the time of his marriage to Catherine (about 38) argues for a prior marriage. There are a number of Yeltons in the records of Shelby County, Indiana who are too old to be Catherine's children, who correpond to the information on Robert's children in the pre-1850 censuses, and there's no other family in which they can logically be placed. At least one of these (David Yelton) claimed in later censuses to have been born in North Carolina and that his parents were born in North Carolina. David may have been named for Elizabeth's father, David Kersey.
