Dayton and Mina Young's descendants |

We grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Most years Dad would take a picture of us children and send a picture Christmas card to relatives and friends. Mom would write a generic Christmas letter to go along with the card. We had no TV because Dad and Mom thought it was a waste of time, and many TV shows were immoral. We did have a radio. As children, we spent a lot of time playing outside, riding bikes, reading, and practicing the violin, piano, trombone, or other instruments.
We attended Assembly of God churches during our growing up years -- Central Assembly of God for many years. Later Mom started up a couple of churches that had been closed. You can read about that in her life story.
In 1961 Dad drew up plans for an addition to the house and contracted people to do the work. One room of the house was made smaller by the addition of a hallway to the new part of the house. That became the laundry room. The old laundry room wall was knocked out to make a larger kitchen / eating area. The remodeled house included 4 bedrooms, bath and a half, study for Mom, and darkroom for Dad.
In May of 1952 Tekla Nelson Stenberg and her daughter Elizabeth Stenberg Parker came to visit. Elizabeth had 3 girls and a boy on the way.
In 1958, the summer after Grandmother Young died, Dorothy Stenberg Phipps came from near Huntsville and stayed with us for about 3 months. The attic was not finished, and we had put a lot of Grandmother Young's stuff up there. The place was a mess. Dorothy helped clean the place up. Then she went to stay with Helen for a while.
Greta Nelson Royal and family visited us a few times. Once was about 1962. Years later they overnighted with us as they were on their way to Florida to visit daughter Beverly.
You can read more about the family in Joyce's Christmas letters from 1998 and 1999.
